UPLINKでは現在、日本の優れたインディーズ映画を英語字幕付きで上映するシリーズを準備中です。そのプレイベントとして、公開3年目に突入した今も尚動員を続けている重要作品『サウダーヂ』を監督した富田克也（空族）の最初の作品『雲の上』と二作目『国道20号線』を上映します。両作品をまだ観ていない日本語ネイティブの方や、ソフト化されることのない空族の映画と再び映画館で出会いたい方も、どうぞこの機会をお見逃し無く。
At UPLINK, we are now preparing for the screening series of Japanese independent films with English subtitles. As a pre-event, we will feature the films of independent filmmaker, Katsuya Tomita (Ku – a tribe of film makers/Kuzoku) whose masterpiece, “Saudade“, has still been expanding the audiences even after 3 years since it first hit the theaters.
For this pre-event, we will be screening the Tomita’s very first work, “Avove the Clouds” and his second work “Off Highway 20”. It will be the rare chance for all the film lovers who have not seen these films yet and are not familiar with Japanese language. Also, it will be a prime opportunity for everyone who are willing to watch these films of KUZOKU in the theater, which are never released on dvd. please don’t miss this chance!

かつて 暴走族だった主人公ヒサシは、同棲するジュンコとパチンコ通いの毎日。シンナーもやめられないていたらくで借金だけが嵩んでゆく。そんなヒサシに族時代からの友人で闇金屋の小澤が 話を持ちかける。
「なぁヒサシ、シンナーなんかやめて俺と一緒に飛ばねえか?」
地方都市を走る国道。両脇を埋めるカラオケBOX、パチンコ店、消費者金融のATM、ドンキ･･･。現代の日本、とりわけ地方のありきたりの風景。ヒサシは夜の国道の灯が届かないその先に闇を見つけてしまった。宇宙のようにからっぽで、涯てのない闇のなかで繰り返されるありふれた事件、そしてかつて見たシンナーの幻覚の残像がヒサシを手招きする。

Highway 20 begins at the Emperor’s Palace in Tokyo and stretches west. Once it goes through the capitol into small towns, the scenery is typical of any seen from Japan’s highways. Shopping malls, discount outlets, pachinko parlors, ATM loan dispensing machines, karaoke clubs, golf practice ranges and love inns… This is what rural areas look like in modern Japan. A drama takes place in the town of Kofu. It’s a small drama about some locals, a drama that could unfold in any Japanese rural town.
Hisashi was once a member of a motorcycle gang. Now he plays pachinko everyday with his live-in girlfriend, Junko. He has a habit of “huffing” paint thinner. His debts accumulate every day. Hisashi’s old friend from the gang, Ozawa is a loan shark. He persuades Hisashi to join his easy-money-making scheme, “Quit inhaling paint thinner and score big with me!”
Hisashi’s dead-end life is made up of the same things that symbolize contemporary rural Japan: Karaoke clubs, pachinko parlors, ATM loan machines and discount outlets along a highway. In this ordinary place that is just like hundreds of other small towns in Japan, Hisashi sees the darkness. Darkness that is out of the reach of neon lights along the highway. In the vacuum of this darkness, life repeats itself endlessly. Hisashi has a flashback of a paint-thinner trip he once had. The hallucination tempts him to the other side. Tantalized, he asks himself, “Can I really go?”

とある地方の片田舎。そのまた小さな、”集落”という呼び名が未だ通用しそうなその土地に、錆の浮いた赤い屋根の寺があった。そしてその寺、紅雲院の赤い屋根に纏わる一つの伝説―。その昔、霧深い夜明けに蛇たちが滝に集まって大蛇となり天に向かって遡り、紅雲院の屋根で体を赤く染めて龍になる、という龍神伝説。紅雲院の跡取りであり、周辺の暴れ者達を束ねていた主人公チケンが傷害の罪で服役、出所してくるところからこの物語は始まる。再び彼の元に集まってくるかつての仲間たち。幼い日に交わされ、果たされず、破られてしまった約束。ヤクザから足を洗いたいという幼馴染を助け、かつて果たされなかった約束を果たすべく、チケンはまるで禊ぎをするかのように伝説に魅入られていく。

In some lonely countryside, or more precisely, in the smaller district where the word “community” still fits perfectly, there is an old temple with a red rusty roof. The temple is called Koun-in whose the roof has a tale passed down from old times.
The tale is told as the myth of dragon god — once upon a time at a brumous crack of dawn, all kinds of snakes magically flocked to a waterfall. As soon as they merged into a single huge serpent, it started to fly up heavenward. But when it incarnadined his body with the red color of the roof, it transformed itself into a rising dragon.
The movie rolls from when Chiken -the lead character- is released from jail where he was serving a term on charge of inflicting bodily injury. He is a son and heir of Koun-in temple and in fact, is also a head man of ruffians of the area.
His old-time people gather around him again. He recalls a promise he made as a kid which wasn’t just kept but rather violated. Chiken is obsessively attracted to this myth as if he thinks he can purify his heart of sin and finally fulfill the promise once broken by helping his childhood friend who wishes to bail out from yakuza, or Japanese gangsters.
